Jimmy Carter’s grandson says former president is “ready to close the Donald Trump chapter”

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – Former President Jimmy Carter is looking forward to “putting an end to Donald Trump” in the upcoming election, his grandson said Tuesday.

The former president, who has been in hospice care since February 2023, looks forward to casting his mail-in ballot for Vice President Kamala Harris, Jason Carter told reporters on the red carpet at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, shortly before the venue began hosting the musical tribute “Delta Air Lines Presents: Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song” in honor of his grandfather on what would have been his 100th birthday.

“He was excited about his 100th birthday, but he’s even more excited about voting for Vice President Harris,” Jason Carter said. “I think he’s ready to turn his back on Donald Trump, like many, many of the rest of us. And I also think he believes in this historic moment.”

“It would be an incredible story at the end of his 100-year life, which we know is still going on, to have grown up in the segregated South, and if one of his last political acts was to elect a black woman president, I think that would be important,” Jason Carter said. “But I also think he wants to bring this country back together. I think he wants to reduce that polarization. I think he wants us to focus first and foremost on the things that make us American, and I think he believes she can do that.”

On October 1, Jimmy Carter turns 100, another milestone in the life of America’s longest-living former president.

The event honoring his life’s work at the Fox Theater on Tuesday evening featured artists from the fields of pop, rock, gospel, country, jazz, hip-hop and classical music.

“He’s definitely going to watch,” Jason Carter said. “He’s doing well. I mean, he’s been in hospice for 19 months now and he’s very weak physically, but emotionally he’s in it and still having these remarkable experiences in this world, so he’s excited.”

Music has always been an important part of Jimmy Carter’s life and continued to be of great importance to Carter even in the hospice.

“When he’s awake and doing the things he continues to love, music is one of those things,” Jason Carter said. “As we’ve kind of shone a light on hospice care in general, you know music is a part of it in many, many contexts. And that’s his role today, but of course it’s also just a way that he continues to celebrate and connect.”

“Of course, not everyone lives to be 100. And when someone lives to be 100 and uses that time on this earth to live their life for others and do good, it’s just something to celebrate,” said Jason Carter. “And it’s fun for us as a family to be able to share that with the public and to some extent with the world and then also share our private moments with him. So we feel really great.”
