Rowe proud and impressed by Welsh duo in Paris

London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Dani Rowe says she is “incredibly proud” of Elinor Barker, who was named Wales’ most successful Olympian last night.

Barker has won four medals in three Games – one gold, two silver and one bronze.

“It’s extraordinary, I was so happy to see them win the silver medal in Madison yesterday,” Rowe told BBC Radio Wales.

“She’s a great role model, especially when you’ve just become a mother. That’s important to mention because it’s not easy.”

“As an athlete you have to be selfish and the way she has managed to juggle that while being at the top of her sport is outstanding.

“She will be a great role model and inspiration for so many young girls and also older women in the sport who now realise that starting a family, having a baby and returning to the sport at the highest level is an option.”

Rowe was also impressed by Emma Finucane in her Olympic debut.

“She rode with such maturity, not just physically but mentally,” Rowe said.

“Of course she was nervous, but the way she performed in the sprint and the keirin was really impressive.

“She comes into the race as the reigning sprint world champion with almost no pressure on her shoulders. She’s 21 and has already won two Olympic medals. So she can race with that confidence and I think she’ll have the momentum that gives her a very good chance of winning another medal.”
