Two local schools were closed on Monday due to threats

UPDATE (5:51 p.m.): Classes at Cibola High School and Centennial Middle School will resume on Tuesday.

UPDATE (2:16 p.m.): The Somerton Police Department (SPD) received a report of a threat at Somerton Middle School this week.

A press release states that officers responded to the report and “contacted a student and his parents at home.” After interviewing the family, officers found no weapons in the home “and the student did not have access to any weapons.”

According to the SPD, the report referred to a notebook belonging to the student that the officers had read. In the notebook, too, they found no threats “or other information related to violence at school.”

After investigating the situation, the SPD stated that there was no credible threat, but announced that it would “continue to address questions from parents and work closely with the Somerton School District to ensure that the safety of students and staff” remains a top priority.

UPDATE (11:14 a.m.): According to the Yuma Union High School District (YUHSD), the curfew for Vista High School and Strategies for Success (VHS/SFS) was lifted at 10:42 a.m.

According to YUHSD, the Yuma Police Department (YPD) investigated a threat made against the school, but the YPD itself considers the threat to be “not credible.”

YUHSD further says that VHS/SFS “will resume their regular class schedule for the remainder of the day.”

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Another school threat is leading to classes being canceled at two Yuma schools on Monday.

If your children attend Cibola High School or Centennial Middle School, please keep them home as both Cibola and Centennial will remain closed due to threats received by the Yuma Police Department (YPD) Sunday afternoon.

Schools say all extracurricular activities, including home and away sporting events, will also be postponed.

According to YPD, both threats were made via social media and are being investigated.

The police are asking parents to talk to their children about it, to report such posts and not to pass them on.

News 11’s Danyelle Burke North will have the latest developments on this story later tonight.
