Writer who left his husband and his job for “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli defends Olivia Nuzzi

A business journalist who left her husband and her job for disgraced “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli defended New York Magazine writer Olivia Nuzzi in her alleged sexting scandal with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — and even candidly suggested that the magazine may have been involved in the alleged emotional affair.

“I am so damn sick of women being scandalized for things that would be utter trivialities if men did them,” Christie Smythe wrote on X just before 1 a.m. Friday, just hours after the sensational allegations surrounding Nuzzi and Kennedy first made headlines.

“Yes, she should have disclosed any conflict of interest, but maybe the magazine secretly encouraged this ‘conflict’ because it was interested in scoops?” Smythe suggested.

The Post has reached out to New York Magazine for comment on Smythe’s remarks.

Nuzzi, 31, was placed on leave from her dream job as a political reporter at New York Magazine after admitting to a “personal relationship with a former person relevant to the 2024 election campaign,” the magazine said Thursday.

The former person, as it later turned out, was 70-year-old Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom she portrayed for the magazine in the fall of 2023.

Sources told The Post that the couple allegedly engaged in sexting earlier this year.

Smythe, now in her early 40s, sparked controversy herself in 2020 when she wrote an article in Elle magazine about leaving her husband and a job at Bloomberg News to pursue a relationship with Shkreli.

Smythe met the future felon in 2015 when she was assigned to cover him for Bloomberg.

She later broke the news of his arrest for securities fraud. Shkreli – who became a pariah when he inflated the price of an antiparasitic drug as CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals – was convicted in 2017 and spent several years behind bars.

Smythe insisted that her relationship with Shkreli remained platonic until she began visiting him in prison in 2018.

She even admitted to missing her first marriage counseling session with her then-husband to see the hated “Pharma Bro.”

Smythe and Shkreli eventually became a couple – and at one point they became so serious that they froze some of Smythe’s eggs and talked about having a child together, she said.

“It was a slap in the face to the media establishment. The matter was settled. Martin was the villain and that was that,” she later told the Washington Post about the reaction to the Elle article.

Shkreli was so upset by her decision to make their relationship public that he ended it via a letter from his lawyer, Smythe said.

However, Smythe also claimed that the two never completely severed ties, saying a few weeks after his early release in 2022 that she hoped to see him again.

“I will always have feelings for him,” Smythe said of her former lover.

Neither Nuzzi nor RFK Jr. have publicly confirmed their alleged relationship.

Nuzzi did not name the Kennedy offspring in her own statement. She admitted that “the nature of some communications between me and a person who was previously the subject of news coverage took a personal turn.”

She claimed there was never a physical relationship.

Nuzzi’s former fiancé, Politico reporter Ryan Lizza, confirmed their separation in a statement in Politico PM on Friday afternoon.

“Because of my connection to this story through my ex-fiancée, my editors and I have agreed that I will not participate in any coverage of Kennedy in Playbook or elsewhere at POLITICO,” the commentary said.

A spokesman for Kennedy denied the rumors, saying the married father of six had only met Nuzzi “once in his life,” when she did a profile of him for New York Magazine last fall.
