New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett will remain balanced if the team ultimately decides to replace him with rookie Drake Maye as the starter.
Brissett struggled in Thursday night’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets. He completed 12 of 18 passes for 98 yards that night. He’s had a rough start in the first three games of the season. He currently ranks 24th in the NFL with 368 passing yards and is 22nd overall with a touchdown pass.
Coach Jerod Mayo initially said he didn’t know if there would be a quarterback change. When asked about those comments, Brissett had an experienced response.
“I’m not going to overreact to something I didn’t hear,” Brissett said, via Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub.
On Friday, Mayo spoke up for Brissett and reiterated his position that the veteran would remain the starter in New England.
The quarterback position will play an important role for the Patriots in the coming weeks. The team needs consistency at this position, and so far, that has not been the case.
Brissett was added to the team in March with the intention of serving as a bridge quarterback for a future rookie, and now it’s a case of waiting to see when he passes the proverbial torch.
