First half

8:08 am: Stanford gets a first down with a 5-yard pass and a 10-yard run by Micah Ford. They are currently at their own 37-yard line. Daniels throws another first down, this time to Ismael Cisse. He adds a tough tackle. Daniels then completes another pass and has the ball at the Syracuse 31-yard line. Daniels has held out on the last two plays and has gained 18 yards. Syracuse is really struggling with tackling.

A false start sets Stanford back a bit and allows a 2nd-and-8 from the SU 17.

Syracuse Punt

11:37 am: Kyle McCord throws for a quick first down, followed by a 6-yard run by LeQuint Allen. McCord throws on a rollout just behind Oronde Gadsden and the tight end can’t hold onto what would have been a great catch. Then McCord’s long pass to Umari Hatcher is blocked. Stanford with a fair catch at the 22-yard line.

Stanford Punt

12:53 pm: Stanford starts with the ball on the 25. A quick first down by a throw from Ashton Daniels, followed by a QB keeper for another 3. A penalty forces Stanford behind the posts. Daniels gets 4 yards despite breaking tackles to avoid a loss. Syracuse forces a fourth down when Daniels’ pass goes through the hands of Tiger Backmier. Trebor Pena calls for a fair catch at his 18-yard line.

Before the game

At least three players from the reserve roster did not play for Syracuse tonight, which was a surprise to most of us. Among them are defensive lineman Tank Wilson and backup running back Will Nixon.

Wilson’s absence will be particularly interesting. He is rated by Pro Football Focus as SU’s highest-rated run defender this season alongside Marlowe Wax. The Orange will now be without both. Their run defense was weak in the opener against Ohio, but played well against Georgia Tech.

Syracuse will look to remain undefeated on Friday night when the Orange (2-0, 1-0) host Stanford in the first ACC game for the Cardinal (1-1, 0-0).

Stanford is also looking for its first FBS win of the season. They lost narrowly to Texas Christian in their opener and then beat FCS Cal-Poly in their second game.

Stanford’s pass defense was questionable against Texas Christian, allowing 353 yards through the air. Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord ranks second in the nation in passing yards per game (367.5).

Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels is a dual threat. He threw for 163 yards and ran for 87 yards against TCU. Wide receiver Elic Ayomanor totaled 1,013 yards last year. It will be interesting to see how Syracuse handles him.

Syracuse receiver Justus Ross-Simmons is expected to make his debut. He transferred from Colorado State in the offseason and was one of many key additions by Fran Brown in the offseason.

Linebacker Marlowe Wax remains out with a lower-body injury.

The Orange enter the game atop the national top 25 college football polls. SU could earn a spot elsewhere in the country with an impressive win and the right results.
