Following the trend of Murphy repeatedly playing killers in his productions, the Menendez family has released a statement about Ryan Murphy’s latest series. Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendezand called the portrayal “naive and inaccurate.” “I thought we had moved beyond the lies and devastating character portrayals of Lyle and created a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrific and blatant lies that run rampant on the show. I can only believe this was done on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I must say that in my opinion Ryan Murphy cannot be so naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives to do this without malicious intent,” Erik Menendez wrote on Lyle’s Facebook page after the show’s debut. “So now Murphy is shaping his horrific narrative through vile and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and me and disheartening slanders.”

Murphy’s series revolves around the Menendez brothers’ murder trial and the claim that the siblings killed their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty,” in self-defense, rather than to claim a large inheritance. They accused their parents of physical and emotional abuse and their father of sexually abusing them as children. “Anyone who has seen Lyle’s testimony, or any testimony about Lyle, knows, of course, that Murphy created a fictional character,” the Menendez family post continued. “The character was so exaggerated and absurd that even if it were called fiction, it would be boring, ridiculous, unimaginative, and clearly written by writers who perhaps should have written the deep dialogue found in porn movies.” It is currently unclear if they have ever seen any other Murphy series prior to this series.
