Mexico breaks another “curse” with victory against Trinidad and Tobago

The current Mexican team continues to erase the memory of disappointing World Cup qualifying campaigns of the past, breaking another long streak with a 1-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

After Mexico topped the Hex rankings for the first time in 12 years with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica on Friday, Tuesday’s victory was Mexico’s first win in Trinidad and Tobago in 13 years.

Mexico can leave happy with a win against Trinidad

“Fortunately we got the points, that’s the most important thing,” said center-back Hector Moreno. “The team has achieved really important results in difficult places because if I’m not mistaken it’s been (13) years since Mexico won here and they’re always difficult places because of the field, the ball and the opponents who are very comfortable here. But at the end of the day we played a great game, a very smart game, and we got the three points, that’s the most important thing.”

Although Mexico’s start to the World Cup has been better than the previous two, its most notable away win remains its 2-1 victory over the United States on American soil. It was the USA’s first victory in a World Cup qualifier since 1972.

Diego Reyes, who headed the winning goal on Tuesday, has helped coach Juan Carlos Osorio find a winning formula.

“I think you have to get used to winning games,” he said. “You have to approach it with a lot of humility, with both feet on the ground and knowing what the goal is, because our goal is to play in the World Cup.”

“It’s a great team. I feel really comfortable. I’m happy and grateful to come here because it’s gone really well for me and, moreover, it’s an honour and a pleasure to represent my country. We’re great teammates, a great team, a big family and I’m happy to be here.”
