Jane’s Addiction cancels reunion tour after argument on stage: “Our hearts are broken”

The reunion tour of a legendary rock band is over almost as quickly as it began.

Jane’s Addiction has canceled the rest of its tour dates after an onstage brawl ended a show early in Boston on Friday night. Chaotic videos posted on social media showed frontman Perry Farrell attacking guitarist Dave Navarro and swinging at his bandmate during the song “Ocean Size”; two crew members and bassist Eric Avery then tackled Farrell in an attempt to drag him away and eventually off the stage.

The band canceled its next show Sunday night in Connecticut and announced Monday that the rest of its tour was also canceled. Fans will automatically receive a refund for tickets.

“Due to a persistent pattern of behavior and mental health issues of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to cancel the current US tour,” Navarro said in a joint statement with Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins. “Our concern for his personal health and safety, as well as our own, has left us with no alternative. We hope he finds the help he needs.”

“We deeply regret that we cannot accommodate all of our fans who have already purchased tickets. We see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or enable us to reliably deliver a great performance every night. It breaks our hearts. Dave, Eric and Stephen.”

Farrell apologized in a separate statement.

“This weekend was incredibly difficult and after having had time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, my fans, family and friends for my behavior during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breakdown resulted in inexcusable behavior and I take full responsibility for how I handled the situation,” Farrell said.

Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, said on Instagram that he was upset that the band’s volume drowned out his singing.

“He screamed just to be heard,” she wrote. “Perry suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the front row started complaining to Perry and yelling at him that the band was playing too loudly and they couldn’t hear him, Perry freaked out.”

She also accused Avery of putting Perry Farrell in a headlock and hitting him in the stomach with “a few unfair punches.”

Jane’s Addiction recently reunited in their classic lineup for their first tour since 2010 and released their first new song together in 34 years. JA had performed in various lineups (including with Duff McKagan and Flea) over the years following their 1991 farewell tour that kicked off the famous Lollapalooza festival, but described their reunion as “different this time” and “the next chapter” of the band.

The group is best known for its alternative rock hits such as “Jane Says,” “Stop!” and the Grammy-nominated “Been Caught Stealing.” Farrell is also known for his work with Porno for Pyros; Navarro’s credits include Red Hot Chili Peppers and television shows such as “Ink Master,” Avery spent nearly two decades with Garbage, and Perkins has performed with Hellride, The Panic Channel, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails and Infectious Grooves.
