Jerod Mayo: Jacoby Brissett is the starting quarterback “until I say he’s not”

The New England Patriots are maintaining the “status quo” at the quarterback position, says Jerod Mayo.

The morning after his team removed Jacoby Brissett from the game in garbage time for rookie Drake Maye, Mayo said Brissett’s status as a starter had not changed.

“Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not the quarterback anymore,” Mayo said.

Brissett was named the starter at the beginning of the season with the expectation that he would be the short-term solution while Maye acclimated to the NFL.

In the first two games, the veteran quarterback managed to keep the team on track, leading the Patriots to a win in Week 1 and a close overtime duel in Week 2.

However, things were sluggish in the Week 3 loss to the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football. Brissett was under a lot of pressure behind a ragtag offensive line at MetLife Stadium.

With Mayo trailing 24-3 in the final minutes, he decided to take Brissett out of the game in overtime, allowing Maye to make his NFL debut.

Immediately after the game, Mayo hinted that the Patriots might reassess the situation.

“I don’t know,” he said. “We talk about it every week. They’re competing for a job. So we’ll sit down as a coaching staff and see where it goes.”

However, the coach’s comments on Friday removed any uncertainty – at least for the immediate future.
