We are well into the second half of September and there are only a few days left of summer. It feels very fall-like this week, with temperatures dropping and leaves already falling. People are already decorating for Halloween. Winter is coming.

In other words, it’s a good time. A good time to solve today’s mini crossword puzzle!

The NYT Mini is a smaller, faster, more digestible and bite-sized version of the larger and more challenging NYT Crossword, and unlike its bigger brother, it’s free to play, with no New York Times subscription required. You can play it on the web or via the app, although you’ll need the app to edit the archive.

1 — With 4- and 5-Across, opposite of Fantasyland — DAS

4 — See 1-Waaa — REAL

5 — See 1-scale — WELT

6 — Curve in the road — CURVE

DOWN

1 — French for “earth” — TERRE

2 — Cut in half — HALF

3 — ____ Statesman — ELDER

4 — Resounding Victory — ROUT

5 — Rooms with toilets, in European abbreviation — WCS

This was a tricky task! The first three ACROSS words obviously can’t be guessed without the help of some DOWNS, so I skipped ahead. I put in CURVE and HALVE and at this point everything became clearer. ROUT was next, followed by STEER. Now I had enough letters to fill in the gaps. THE REAL WORLD pretty much solved it, and I still don’t know why in European shorthand they call a bathroom WCS. I solved today’s mini in 1:40. How did it go?
