Laura Loomer accuses Kamala Harris of “hypocrisy” over gun remarks

Laura Loomer called Kamala Harris a hypocrite after the Democratic presidential candidate spoke about her personal gun ownership during the gun control campaign.

The former congressional candidate released a clip of Harris’ conversation with Oprah Winfrey. In it, Harris says that she and her running mate Tim Walz are both gun owners and declares, “If someone breaks into my house, they’re going to get shot.”

Oprah is endorsing Harris and hosted a two-hour streaming session of Unite for America in Michigan on Thursday, which included an extensive interview with Harris and questions from the audience. The issue of gun ownership came up during a segment of the livestream that discussed school shootings.

Loomer, who is campaigning for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, reposted Harris’ statement on her X account, but changed it from “they’re going to be shot” to “they’re going to be shot.” Whether intentionally or not, Loomer quoted Harris as saying she was using African American Vernacular English (AAVE).

Loomer accused Harris of hypocrisy, claiming that she wanted to “take away people’s guns” but wanted to keep her own.

Several people in Loomer’s comments section echoed her accusations of hypocrisy and expressed doubts that Harris even owned a gun.

Loomer is known for attacking Harris. On September 8, Loomer wrote on X about the vice president: “If Kamala Harris wins, the White House will smell like curry and White House speeches will be delivered through a call center and the American people will only be able to provide feedback via a customer satisfaction survey at the end of the call that no one will understand.”

Harris and Walz have both been open about their gun ownership. At the presidential debate, Harris said, “This thing about taking away everyone’s guns – Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking away anyone’s guns, so stop lying about that stuff all the time.”

Harris had already spoken about owning a gun during the 2019 Democratic primary election campaign.

Minnesota Governor Walz is also known for seeing his approval rating with the NRA drop from an “A” to an “F” after he pushed through stricter gun controls following the Parkland shooting in 2018.

Harris’ campaign has not expressed a desire to “take away” all guns, a point she made clear in her interview with Oprah. However, she is committed to banning assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. She also supports the requirement for universal background checks.

The Harris team was asked for comment via email.

Harris currently heads the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, where she created the nation’s first National Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) Resource Center to help law enforcement agencies “optimize the use of red flag laws.”

Many of the gun control measures Harris has championed, such as background checks and enforcing red flag laws, are popular with voters. According to a recent Pew poll, six in 10 Americans believe it is too easy for people to get a firearm and support stricter gun laws.

The ban on assault weapons is also widely popular, although there are stronger divisions along party lines: 42 percent of Republicans and 85 percent of Democrats support a ban.

In addition, half of Americans view gun violence as a problem in the country and believe that an increase in the number of guns is harmful to society.
