Keith Urban is a devoted father to two teenage girls, but the country superstar has now revealed that he had to intentionally and carefully break the “chain” to ensure that his daughters do not grow up in the same environment he grew up in.

Keith was born in New Zealand and moved to Nashville with the support of his father, who encouraged his love of music. “I never thought in a million years that I would still be processing this or working through it in any way, but apparently I’m still working through it, and I’m on the second verse of this song andI mention my dad in this thing in passing and then I sit on the couch and burst into tears,” He said his producer in the room simply acknowledged that the tears meant that what he was writing was “true” and that it allowed him to stay in that state of mind while he finished the song.

However, Keith went on to say that the song was not a “sad song” and that he hoped to end his upcoming album with the piece because it “summarizes what I think about my own journey, namely that it is not my fault where I come from…but it is my responsibility to do something about it … and (not) continue whatever it was.”

“I haven’t done it to the extent that I would like to,” he added, saying that he is still “evolving” but it is his “responsibility to move forward.”

Keith and Nicole Kidman married in 2006, and he had already been to rehab twice. Months into their marriage, he suffered a relapse, after which Nicole performed an intervention that changed Keith’s life forever in 2016.

Both girls made their red carpet debut in 2024 when they joined their father and extended family to honor Nicole, who was honored at the AFI Life Achievement Award gala.
