CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Edwin McCain, a South Carolina singer-songwriter, was appointed deputy sheriff by Charleston County Sheriff Kristin Graziano on Wednesday during a ceremony at the sheriff’s office headquarters in North Charleston.
This move comes after McCain dedicated his life to sharing his battle with substance use disorder and his decision to live a sober lifestyle, the sheriff’s office said in a press release commemorating the event.
“Nobody is too far away. I’ve seen incredible comebacks, it’s possible. As long as they’re still breathing, a comeback is possible,” McCain said in an exclusive interview with Sheriff Graziano, describing his beginnings in music, his quick rise to fame and his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. “You can either be a living example or a dead example.”

McCain spent part of his young adult life in the Lowcountry as a student at the College of Charleston. From there, his career quickly took off, from a regular music gig in downtown Charleston to much larger stages worldwide.
“I’m not just a fan of his music, but of everything he stands for,” said Sheriff Graziano.
“It can show many people in our community who are struggling with substance use disorders or are in mental health crisis that help is available and that there is hope on the other side.”
