Passengers scream and pray as tropical storm rocks plane

In the airspace, everyone can hear you scream.

Footage captures the dramatic moment when passengers panicked on board a plane hit by a tropical storm in mid-flight.

“I have never experienced such bad weather on a flight,” passenger Zuleima Ebratt told Jam Press about the “crazy” scene that unfolded yesterday on board a flight from Medellín to Barranquilla, Colombia.

Avianca Airlines Flight 8586 was reportedly struck by a tropical storm that was lashing the northern part of the country with winds of 72 km/h.

Passengers panic during the turbulence caused by the storm. “We were of course stressed and desperate, everyone was crying, screaming, others were praying because we really knew we wouldn’t survive,” said passenger Zuleima Ebratt. Jam Press Video

“It happened when we started the approach to Barranquilla,” Ebratt told the local newspaper El Tiempo. “Up until that point, the captain told us: ‘We’re going to land in Barranquilla’ and everything was normal. Suddenly we were hit by fog, couldn’t see anything and the turbulence started.”

The heartbreaking footage shows the plane shaking uncontrollably, causing passengers to scream and recite prayers as if it were a disaster movie.

“Virgin Carmen, Hail Mary, pure virgin, God bless you…! My God, please help us,” chanted a frightened passenger, according to El Tiempo.

“Of course we were stressed and desperate. Everyone was crying and screaming, others were praying because we really knew we were not going to survive,” Ebratt said.

The impact was so severe that the pilot was unable to land, forcing him to divert the flight and land in the coastal city of Cartagena.

The flight was finally able to continue to its destination Barranquilla several hours later than planned.

Another clip shows passengers applauding the pilot and cabin crew after the plane lands safely on the tarmac.

Unfortunately, many people there were not so lucky.

The storm devastated numerous areas in the departments of Atlántico, Magdalena and Bolívar, uprooting trees, damaging roofs and causing power outages in several municipalities.

Local authorities and aid organizations are currently assessing the damage and working to restore basic services.
