AirPlay 2 SmartTV: Is it worth it? Or is an Apple TV better?

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get one since LCD smart TVs with AirPlay 2 built-in are cheap now and we’re getting rid of our old CRT TV soon.

My mom watches a lot of movies from streaming services on her 9th generation iPad using a pair of wired EarPods (3.5mm jack) and her posture on the couch is not the best during so many hours. She also plays games on the iPad, mainly the Game 3 kind of gaming. She also uses it for iMessage, viewing photos, and FaceTime calls.

The plan is this: I’ll buy a cheap SmartTV with AirPlay 2 integration so she can watch what she’s watching on the iPad on a big TV. However, I’m not sure if this will drain the battery of the 9th generation iPad or make it hotter. I’m also not sure if she’ll be able to continue using the wired EarPods connected to her iPad while streaming the video to the TV.

The second option I’ve been thinking about is getting an Apple TV, either to stream via AirPlay 2 or – most likely – to use the video streaming apps on the AppleTV itself. Although that doesn’t make much sense since most SmartTVs these days already have apps for streaming content providers like Max, Netflix, Disney+ or Prime Video.

So… what would you do? When streaming content (a game or a movie) to the big TV via AirPlay 2, does the sound still come through the wired headphones? Can you choose that? Is the streaming good enough to watch the iPad content there?

Thank you very much.
