Rivalry in Volleyball, ACC Unity and Kentucky Football Talk

Who’s ready for the rivalry?!?!?!? Tonight, the Historic Memorial Coliseum hosts a top-15 matchup between the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Louisville Cardinals.

The Wildcats (6-3) enter the matchup ranked just outside the top 10 at No. 11. Louisville is the fourth-ranked college volleyball team with just one loss on its record, and that loss happened to be against a common opponent. Penn State swept UofL in Happy Valley, while the Nittany Lions had to overcome a two-set deficit to defeat Kentucky on the road in five sets.

Kentucky leads the overall series 37-28, but the Cats have lost three straight to the Cards, including a 3-0 win last fall at the Yum! Center. Tonight is a good night to end that losing streak. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EST and will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Is the ACC back?

Last night, Florida State seemed to end the fight. After three weeks of being bashed by the entire college football world, the Seminoles are ready to admit they belong in a shitty league.

Sorry. I couldn’t resist taking a swipe at the ACC. They are so bad at everything, I just can’t help it.

Tensions between Florida State, Clemson and the ACC have been high, to say the least. The two universities fought in court over their exit from the league. The strained relationship now appears to be back on track, temporarily calming talks of a league shakeup. According to ESPN, the league will give the major brands a higher share of revenue and end the rights transfer agreement six years early in exchange for dropped lawsuits. These are just negotiations, but it’s a step in the right direction to calm the turbulent league… at least in the meantime.

Learn about Kentucky’s offense

So what was so different between week two and week three for the Wildcats? They looked like completely different teams. The Cats attribute this change to good practice habits. Small details make a big difference.

“I think we all realized that our attention to detail, our good positioning, our fast play and our penalty avoidance have made us significantly better,” offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan said Tuesday.

“Did the scoreboard show that? Absolutely not. But I think when you go through a week like we did against South Carolina, where there are only penalties and self-inflicted injuries in the second half, you play against the No. 1 team in the country, play relatively cleanly and have a chance to win the football game at the end. The execution of the training corresponds to the reality on match day. That focus has been increased and we need to keep it there.”

Hear from more Kentucky coaches

Today is a double dose with two talks from the Kentucky football team. Mark Stops will be on the SEC teleconference right after lunch. After practice wraps up around 5 p.m., Brad White and the Kentucky defense will spend time chatting with the Kentucky media.

Kentucky LB JJ Weaver on Allstate Good Works Team

The Allstate Good Works Team recognizes the best community service workers in college football. JJ Weaver certainly deserves the honor. A mental health advocate, he founded the Perfect Fit Support Group for student-athletes at UK, and that’s just a fraction of what he’s done for others during his time on campus. Kentucky has the second-most student-athletes named to the Good Works Team: 18 since 1992 and eight during the Mark Stoops era.
