The new sports at the 2028 Olympic Games in LA

The next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 will feature several brand new sports, but also the return of some sports that have not been included for decades.

One sport making its debut as a voluntary sport is flag football, a limited-contact version of American football.

The other sport is squash, which is being played at the Olympic Games for the first time after the World Squash Federation had hoped for its inclusion for years.

An “optional sport” at the Olympic Games is a sport that the host city may add to the Games in addition to the mandatory core sports determined by the International Olympic Committee.

In addition, several sports are returning to Olympic sport after a break of several years.

Baseball and softball, which were previously contested at the Olympic Games between 1992 and 2008 and in 2020, return to the list of sports already contested at the Olympic Games.

For the first time since 1900, cricket will be played at the Games. Unlike previously, when it was a two-innings-per-team competition, the event has been proposed to feature a Twenty20 format with a limited number of overs.

Lacrosse will also be back for the first time since 1948. It is planned to be played in the “Lacrosse Sixes” format, a fast, compact version of the sport.

These additional sports were proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee in 2023 and subsequently approved by the International Olympic Committee.

“LA28’s proposed sports inspire imagination on the field and drive culture beyond it. They are relevant, innovative and community-focused, and are played in backyards, schoolyards, community centers, stadiums and parks across the U.S. and around the world,” LA28 Chair Casey Wasserman previously said.

“They will bring new athletes to the Games, engage diverse fan bases and expand the Games’ presence in the digital space, further amplifying LA28’s mission to deliver an unparalleled experience.”

While these new sports will be included in the next Games, some sports that were the focus of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will not be included in LA.

The sport of breaking, the official name of breakdancing, was offered as an optional sport for the first time in Paris, but will no longer be part of the program in 2028.

Although some Breaking fans expressed disappointment that it would not be included, the U.S. team said it was happy with its appearance in 2024.

“I’m just focused on the 2024 Olympics in Paris,” said Victor Montalvo of Team USA, according to AZ Central. “For us, it was shocking that we were even in the Olympics because we didn’t expect it at all. So we’re just grateful.”

Karate, motorsports and kickboxing have also reportedly been excluded from inclusion in the next Games.
