Kamala Harris is the first Democrat in decades not to receive support from the Teamsters

Vice President Kamala Harris is the first Democrat in over two decades not to receive the Teamsters’ presidential nomination, as the union rejected both Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The Teamsters, which represents more than 1.3 million workers, have supported Democratic presidential candidates for the past 20 years. In a statement released Wednesday, the union said it will not endorse a presidential candidate in the 2024 election, marking the first time since 1996 that it has decided not to endorse a candidate.

All other major unions have supported Harris’ campaign.

After 1996, the Teamsters supported Democratic candidates Al Gore, John Kerry, former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and President Joe Biden.

Decades earlier, the union supported the election campaigns of former Republican presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush.

“Unfortunately, neither of the two major candidates has been able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure that the interests of working people always come before those of big business,” Teamsters President Sean O’Brien said Wednesday.

O’Brien added that the union wants Harris and Trump to pledge not to interfere in “critical union campaigns or core Teamsters industries” and to respect members’ right to strike. Neither candidate has made that pledge, he said.

The union nevertheless called on all members to “participate in the upcoming elections and continue to participate in the political process,” even though the union received no support for doing so.

Newsweek reached out to Harris’ campaign team via email on Wednesday afternoon, requesting comment.

Trump’s campaign team was quick to point out that the majority of Teamsters members were in favor of supporting the former president, according to a union poll released Wednesday.

In an email, the campaign team acknowledged that it was not a formal endorsement of the union, adding that Teamsters polling data from July 14 to September 15 showed that 59.6 percent of rank-and-file members supported Trump, while 34 percent supported Harris.

Other data from April 9 to July 3 showed Biden leading Trump, 44 percent to 36 percent. The poll did not provide information on poll size or methodology.

“President Trump is fighting for the working men and women of America. President Trump’s agenda will deliver tax relief and reverse the inflation that hits working families the hardest,” the campaign said.

Harris and Trump are actively involved with the Teamsters and emphasize the important role of unions in the 2024 election.

On Monday, Harris visited the union headquarters while Trump and Biden participated in roundtable discussions with Teamsters leadership. Biden called himself the “most pro-union president.”

In a rare appearance, O’Brien spoke at the Republican National Convention in July.
