Raiders Week 2 Winners and Losers: Brock Bowers Breaks Out in Baltimore

Trailing by 10 points and as clear underdogs with just over 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Las Vegas Raiders looked like they were on the losing side in their Week 2 game against the Baltimore Ravens. A loss would have dropped the Raiders to 0-2 and made it feel like the season would never really get going.

However, Las Vegas pulled out all the stops, scoring the game’s final 13 points to pull off an unlikely upset, led by quarterback Gardner Minshew, who linked up with rookie tight end Brock Bowers and star wide receiver Davante Adams several times during the fourth-quarter comeback.

So we have numerous winners at our disposal in this week’s “Winners and Losers” column.

WINNER: Brock Bowers

The Georgia product had a good outing in the season opener, but last Sunday’s game felt like his breakout NFL game. Bowers caught all nine passes thrown to him for nearly 100 yards (98 yards) and had several crucial first downs to help him make the comeback.

Although he didn’t reach the end zone, a 27-yard catch on third and eight late in the third quarter brought the Raiders to the one-yard line and set up the team’s first touchdown of the game.

Bowers has reached 125 yards so far this season, which according to the Raiders’ X/Twitter account.

LOSER: Kolton Miller

According to Pro Football Focus, Miller has had a rough start to the season, allowing five sacks in two games, including three on Sunday. To his credit, he’s just come off shoulder surgery and missed most of the team’s offseason program, which explains his early struggles.

Ultimately, however, the team isn’t getting what it needs from its best offensive lineman, and Miller needs to work harder to hold up the quarterback. He also earned a below-average PFF grade of 58.7 as a run blocker, which he’ll need to improve on for the Raiders’ rushing attack to get going.

WINNER: Gardner Minshew

Backed into a corner with some people clamoring for Aidan O’Connell to start next week, Minshew managed to fire up and lead the comeback, finishing with 30 successful passes on 38 attempts (78.9 percent) for 276 yards and a touchdown, and the bulk of that performance came in the crucial period when the team needed it most.

A week after being criticized for being too conservative, the free agent signing started driving the ball down the field, with his ADOT increasing by 1.6 yards since the season opener (6.3) and him throwing two “big throws,” according to PFF. Hopefully that’s a sign of things to come and he can keep the momentum going.

LOSER: Andre James

Much like Miller, Las Vegas needs James to run the ball successfully. He was below average in that regard in Weeks 1 and 2, posting an ugly PFF run-blocking grade of 40.2 on Sunday, which is the worst grade among centers by 10 points (prior to Monday Night Football).

While the Raiders have a lot of question marks up front, James is expected to be a stabilizing presence within the position group as he is one of two offensive linemen who has a lot of starting experience and isn’t switching positions. However, you wouldn’t know that based on his play so far.

WINNER: Davante Adams

As mentioned above, a major factor in the Silver and Black’s comeback was Adams getting more involved in the offense. He finished the game with nine catches for 110 yards and a five-catch, 88-yard, and point touchdown in the second half. He also managed to draw two pass interference penalties, make an impressive catch on the sideline, and catch three of four contested passes.

In other words, the Raiders’ best offensive player stepped up at the crucial moment when it mattered most and the team needed him.

LOSER: Marcus Epps

Two weeks have passed and Marcus Epps’ missed tackles are becoming a big problem. PFF has missed him six times this season, which is the most in the league, and last Sunday was really bad as he led the team with four tackles. Especially as a safety, something like that can’t happen.

If the six-year veteran doesn’t turn things around soon, his playing time will suffer, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Antonio Pierce make a change as early as next week. Pierce has already made additions at other positions, and the safety spot could be next.

WINNER: Maxx Crosby

At this point, it should be no surprise that Crosby did his thing while taking advantage of the weak right side of the Ravens’ offensive line this weekend. Crosby was responsible for half of the Raiders’ pressures (four) and recorded two sacks, according to PFF, for a total of three sacks in two games this season.

As a run defender in Baltimore, Madd Maxx graded 81.7 (best among EDGEs with at least 10 run defense snaps), recorded three defensive stops (3rd), and averaged -0.3 yards tackle depth.

This is a dominant performance in both phases of the game.

WINNER: Antonio Pierce

I was hard on Pierce last week, so I have to give him credit for this win. Since he took over as head coach, AP has talked about building a tough and combative team, and the resilience the team showed in getting this win showed that the players are taking the coach’s message to heart.

This was a big game in terms of the culture Pierce wants to create in the building.
