Chargers quarterback injured, status uncertain before game against Pittsburgh Steelers

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was injured in his team’s win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, raising doubts about his playing status against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3.

With two minutes left in the third quarter, Herbert stepped into the pocket and was pulled to the ground by Carolina edge rusher DJ Johnson while defensive tackle Jayden Peevy fell on top of him.

Herbert was slow to get back to his feet before heading to the medical tent with an apparent lower-body injury. Since the play resulted in a fourth down, he returned for Los Angeles’ ensuing series and did not miss a single snap for the rest of the game.

During his postgame press conference, Herbert told reporters that he had an X-ray after the game and was in pain after being rolled up, but he said he would not have any further information about his future availability until the start of the work week.

“I must have just been rolled up,” Herbert said. “A big heap, I was rolled up. I walked away, had a little bit of pain, got it bandaged up, went in and got an X-ray. I’ll know more in the next few days, but I was able to finish the game and keep moving forward.”

Herbert was seen walking with a noticeable limp when he returned to the Chargers locker room after the victory over the Panthers.

Los Angeles is currently 2-0 for the first time since 2012, having also defeated the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1. Herbert has rushed for 274 yards, three touchdowns and one interception on 46 aerial attempts.

If he can’t play in Pittsburgh, the Chargers will likely select backup Easton Stick. The six-year veteran has started four times in his career, all last season, and in those appearances he went 0-4 with 950 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
