The Cleveland Browns cannot be satisfied with the performance of quarterback Deshaun Watson in the first two weeks of the 2024 NFL season. While he was not bad, he did not inspire the slightest confidence that he can bounce back with a good year.

Against this backdrop, a potential trading opportunity could arise.

Bryce Young was benched by the Carolina Panthers after his early season struggles. His tenure with the Panthers was poor, but he is still the former No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft for a reason.

Could the Browns consider entering the roster to sign the young quarterback in a trade and develop him into their long-term franchise playmaker?

Max Dible from Difficult has suggested Cleveland should do just that. He has proposed a trade package that sends quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a second- or third-round pick in 2025 and a sixth-round pick to Carolina for Young.

“That only works if Cleveland believes it can save Young as a young player. However, the Browns have a reputation for signing first-round talent who didn’t work out in their first NFL stops, and Young is the ultimate example of such a player, simply benched as the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft after just 19 games in the league.”

In 18 games of his NFL career, Young has completed 59.3 percent of his pass attempts for 3,122 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He has also rushed for 271 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

These numbers obviously do not match the Panthers’ expectations of him.

If the Browns were to trade for Young, they wouldn’t necessarily have to put him on the field. They could keep Watson in the starting lineup and develop Young from the sidelines.

However, it is very unlikely that Carolina will give up on Young completely. But if they are open to discussions about a potential trade, Cleveland should definitely explore the possibility.

It is safe to assume that there will continue to be speculation about Young’s future with the Panthers. The substitution came as something of a surprise.
