These missing iOS 18 features are coming in iOS 18.1 or later

The newly released iOS 18 has a ton of new features to offer. But there are also many features it doesn’t include that are coming later. Apple Intelligence, the new Siri, Apple Mail upgrades, and more won’t reach your iPhone until future updates. Here’s everything coming in iOS 18.1 or later.

Apple Intelligence Features

Arguably the biggest highlight of iOS 18 is Apple Intelligence. However, the first AI features are not included in the just-released iOS 18.0. Instead, they are coming next month as part of iOS 18.1. With a compatible device (e.g. iPhone 16, 16 Pro, or 15 Pro), you can:

This is just the beginning, as more Apple Intelligence features will be available in December with iOS 18.2 and in the spring with iOS 18.3 or 18.4.

New and improved Siri

A key part of Apple Intelligence is the new, powerful Siri. If you buy an iPhone 16 with iOS 18 today, it will have the same old Siri as always. But next month, when iOS 18.1 is released, Siri will get a new, bright design, a useful typing interface, better understanding of requests and context, and more. Later improvements will follow later in the year, like ChatGPT integration. And in 2025, Siri will continue to improve with powerful in-app and cross-app actions, screen detection, and more.

Apple Mail Upgrades

Apple Mail Inbox Categories

iOS 18 brings a lot of changes to Apple’s Mail app, but not all at once. The first Mail updates will appear in iOS 18.1 with AI summaries, priority messages, and Smart Reply. Even bigger changes are coming with the iOS 18.2 update in December. By the end of the year, Mail will be able to automatically sort emails into different categories like transactions, promotions, and updates. Your inbox will also move unread messages to the top and collect messages from the same sender together.

Genmoji and other new emoji

Your emoji possibilities will be endless later this year. Not only will Apple add new built-in emoji, likely in iOS 18.2, but Genmoji will also be available on all Apple Intelligence compatible devices. Once it does, you can type in a description of the emoji you want and the AI will instantly generate it for you.

Home app features

iOS 18 Home Features

The Home app will also support robot vacuums later this year, so hopefully you’ll be able to control your Roomba directly from the Apple app. It will also be possible to view power usage directly in Home. Finally, iOS 18.0 technically enables ultra-wideband door locks, but there are currently no such products – hopefully that will be fixed soon.

Drag & Drop for iPhone mirroring

If you own a Mac, iPhone mirroring is a great new way to interact with your phone through your Mac. macOS Sequoia and iOS 18 make this feature possible, but it will gain another new ability later this year. After a future update, you will be able to drag and drop files and photos between your Mac and your mirrored iPhone. The feature seems to be the new fastest way to transfer data.

Packing

iOS 18 is a strong release, but it’s going to get even better in the coming months. There’s a lot to discover and enjoy in the current 18.0 version, but there’s a lot more to come starting with iOS 18.1 next month and the first Apple Intelligence features.
