CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) – Southern Illinois University Carbondale is celebrating Constitution Day on Tuesday, September 17th with special activities.

Walter Ray, Morris Library’s political documents archivist in the Special Collections Research Center, will distribute free pocket Constitutions to students from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. At the Morris Library, Ray will be dressed as President Abraham Lincoln and will be available for discussions on a variety of topics, including the Civil War and the habeas corpus laws that Lincoln repealed in 1862.

Simmons Law School will host an informal public discussion on the First Amendment with Stan Cox, associate professor of constitutional law, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 164 in the Lesar Law Building.

The law school will also provide quizzes on the Constitution on monitors in the law library and distribute free pocket copies of the Constitution while supplies last.

Constitution Day marks the anniversary of the completion and signing of the U.S. Constitution by delegates to the Philadelphia Convention in 1787.

According to the SIU, all educational institutions receiving federal funds must offer annual programs on the U.S. Constitution.
