Nearly two months after the last earthquake, tremors were felt in Lubbock and West Texas on Monday evening from a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Martin County.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the Permian Basin on Monday evening at 7:49 p.m. The earthquake occurred about 21 miles west-southwest of Ackerly at a depth of about 3 miles, prompting residents across West Texas to report shaking.

MMost reports came from the region’s larger communities, including Lubbock, Midland, Odessa, Big Spring and San Angelo, according to USGS.

There were no reports of damage as of Monday night; the USGS predicted that the risk of fatalities and economic losses from the quake was low.

Moderate earthquakes are nothing new in West Texas, although most cause little or no confirmed damage. On July 23, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake was reported in Scurry County, and there were noticeable in the following days.
