Former St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams announces retirement

Matt Adams, who has not played in the major leagues for over three years, announced Sunday night that he will end his career with the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old first baseman was drafted by the Cardinals in 2009 and played for the team from 2012 to 2018. He helped St. Louis win the National League championship in 2013 and earned the nickname “Big City” during his time with the club.

Adams peaked from 2013 to 2019, posting a .261 batting average with a .782 OPS and a 5.7 WAR during that span. He hit over 15 home runs in 2013, 2015, and 2016, and at least 20 home runs every season from 2017 to 2019.

Over the course of his 10-year MLB career, Adams recorded 624 hits, 118 home runs, 399 RBI and 297 runs in 856 games.

Between 2017 and 2021, Adams also played for the Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, and Colorado Rockies. As a member of the Nationals, Adams helped eliminate the Cardinals in the 2019 NLCS and went on to win his first World Series title.

After playing as an independent with the Kansas City Monarchs in 2022, Adams spent all of 2023 with the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate in Rochester. That season, he posted a .272 batting average with an .800 OPS in 62 games in the Mexican League before ultimately deciding to end his career.

Adams said he will be surrounded by friends and family at Busch Stadium on Wednesday when the Cardinals face the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran hitter also noted that he will not leave baseball behind but will move into the world of coaching.
