Disney and FX win most Emmys in 2024, HBO plummets

Even before the Emmys began on Sunday, there was no big question about which media company would receive the most awards at the end of the night. Led by 14 Creative Arts wins for ShogunDisney had a virtually unassailable lead in terms of awards won.

The only question was how much the Mouse House would increase the score. The answer: quite a bit.

Under the direction of Shogun And The bear — which won four awards each at Sunday’s ceremony, setting records for awards won by a drama (18) and a comedy (11) in a single year — FX-produced programs led all platforms with 36 awards at the 76th Emmy Awards. FX alone would have tied Disney for first place among media conglomerates, but the company also took home 24 other awards, bringing its total to a record-breaking 60.

Netflix came in a distant second with 24 Emmys at Sunday’s ceremony and last week’s Creative Arts Awards — two more than it won at the 75th Emmys. HBO/Max won 14 Emmys — the lowest total for the Warner Bros. Discovery franchises (which compete for the Emmys as a single entity) in more than a quarter century (HBO won 14 Emmys in 1998, long before the streaming era began). Two other companies, Apple and NBCUniversal, also reached double digits.

While Shogun And The bear has done the heavy lifting for Disney, several other programs have also received multiple awards: The Disney+ documentary Jim Henson: Idea generator won five Emmys, the Oscars landed four wins and Hulu’s Only murders in the building and FX’s Welcome to Wrexham had three each. Hulu’s comedy How I met your fatherwhich was canceled after its second season, won two awards, one for multi-camera cinematography and one for editing.

HBO and Max had some bright spots on Sunday, including three wins for Max’s Hacking (Best Comedy Series, Screenplay for a Comedy and Actress: Jean Smart). Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won two Emmys and Alex Edelman: Just for us won the award for best screenplay for a Variety special (and delivered one of the most heartfelt acceptance speeches of Sunday, when Edelman paid tribute to the live stage show’s director, Adam Brace, who died in 2023).

The bad year for HBO/Max is likely due primarily to timing and depleted inventory following the strikes. Consequence was at the Emmys for the last time a year ago and shows like The Last of Us And The White Lotus has not aired any new episodes this Emmy year after receiving a total of 13 awards in 2023—just one shy of the entire HBO/Max total this year. Both shows will likely premiere in time to be considered for the 2025 Emmys, as will House of the Dragon (an Emmy win for the first season).

That’s the future. In the present, the 2024 Emmys belonged to Disney and specifically FX. A breakdown of the wins by network, media company and program is below.
