Why was the star left out of In Memoriam?

While watching the Emmy Awards tribute to the recently departed stars of the television industry, viewers couldn’t help but notice the absence of one of their beloved “friends”: Matthew Perry.

While Jelly Roll belted out his soulful song “I Am Not Okay,” the awards ceremony honored artists such as Terry Carter, Shannen Doherty, James Earl Jones, Richard Lewis, Bob Newhart, Ryan O’Neal, Gena Rowlands, Donald Sutherland and Carl Weathers.

“How on earth could Matthew Perry not be at the Emmys?!?!”, a member of X, formerly known as Twitter, asked.

Perry died on October 28, 2023 at the age of 54 from “the acute effects of ketamine.”

“Hey, @TheEmmys and @TelevisionAcad”, wrote another. “You have forgotten someone in your remembrance! (sic) Matthew Perry helped change the industry. He was a great man and deserves to be recognized tonight!”

These and other viewers will be happy to hear that the Television Academy honored Perry at the Emmy Awards broadcast in January, which was postponed because of the Hollywood strikes.

At the ceremony earlier this year, Charlie Puth joined husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty onstage to perform an acoustic version of his hit “See You Again,” originally a 2015 collaboration with rapper Wiz Khalifa and dedicated to the late Paul Walker. The trio surprised the crowd at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater when Puth sang the “Friends” theme song “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts.

As a vignette of “The View” creator Barbara Walters faded from the screen, a photo of Perry appeared to the clapping and cheers of the star-studded audience.

Questions about Perry’s death remain unanswered. In August, Martin Estrada, the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, announced charges against five people in connection with Perry’s death.

Doctor Salvador Plasencia, 42, and 41-year-old Jasveen Sangha, referred to in the Justice Department’s press release as the “ketamine queen” of North Hollywood, face 18 counts for allegedly “distributing ketamine to Perry during the final weeks of his life.” Co-conspirators include Perry’s assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, 59, who lives with him, Dr. Mark Chavez, 54, and Erik Fleming, 54, who is described as an acquaintance of Perry.
