Emmy predictions 2024: Best Actress in a TV Movie/Miniseries

Less than eight months after receiving her first Oscar nomination in 29 years, Jodie Foster is widely expected to win in her first-ever acting Emmy application. The True Detective: Night Country star is actually one of a number of newcomers in the Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries category, with half of her competitors also nominated as general acting first-timers.

Together with Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), Foster is one of three women currently nominated for leading the latest episode of an anthology series. The honorees here for single-season programs are Brie Larson (“Chemistry lessons”) and Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”).

To determine how likely Foster is to win, we’re taking a closer look at each nominee. Submit your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

Jodie Foster as Liz Danvers (“True Detective: Night Country”)

Two-time Oscar winner Foster ended her nearly five-decade hiatus from physical television acting by portraying an Alaska police chief who reunites with an old colleague to investigate the disappearance of a group of scientists. She previously received Emmy nominations for producing the TV movie “The Baby Dance” (1999) and directing the third episode of “Orange Is the New Black” (2014).

Brie Larson as Elizabeth Zott (“Chemistry Lesson”)

Like Foster, Larson is also an executive producer of her show. The 2020 Best Interactive Program winner (“The Messy Truth VR Experience”) plays the host of a 1960s cooking show in this Apple TV+ series who uses her background as a chemist to teach her predominantly female audience in a unique way.

Juno Temple as Dot Lyon (“Fargo”)

Temple, nominated three times as a supporting actress for the comedy series “Ted Lasso,” follows Kirsten Dunst (2016) and Carrie Coon (2017) became the third Fargo actress to win an award in this category. The fifth season of the series tells the story of how her character’s life as an ordinary housewife in Minnesota is thrown into disarray when her abusive ex-husband discovers her whereabouts.

Sofía Vergara as Griselda Blanco (“Griselda”)

Eleven years after her fourth and final nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Modern Family, Vergara is being honored for her portrayal of a real-life Colombian drug lord who ran amok in Miami, Florida, for decades. The six-part series also received Creative Arts honors for its cinematography and costume design.

Naomi Watts as Babe Paley (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”)

In her second TV collaboration with Multi-Hyphen Robert F. Kennedy Following 2022’s “The Watcher,” Watts plays one of several New York celebrities whose scandalous lives partly inspired Truman Capoteunfinished novel “Answered Prayers”. The 55-year-old is an absolute Emmy newcomer and Tom Hollanderwho is nominated for his interpretation of Capote in the corresponding male category.

So who will win the 2024 Emmy for Best Actress in a TV Movie/Miniseries? Although no actress from True Detective has yet earned a Television Academy Award, Foster should not worry, as the same is true for Fargo and Feud. One might think that the star of the first season Matthew McConaughey remained close even after winning the Oscar that same year, but his situation was different in that he lost votes to a fellow actor (Woody Harrelson) and probably didn’t have much of a chance to stop Bryan Cranston of his farewell award as Best Drama Actor for “Breaking Bad”.

True Detective is expected to score multiple wins in its most successful season, with Foster representing its best chance at a big win. With no challenger from multi-category leader Baby Reindeer, she will have to watch out for Larson and Temple, both of whose wins would be considered surprises, as Foster has a 75% Gold Derby backing rate.
