Lamorne Morris wins supporting actor award in miniseries

Lamorne Morris won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries for his role in True Detective: NightlandHe beat out his co-star John Hawkes for the award. This is the first Emmy nomination and first win for the actor, who rose to prominence with his comedic role in New Girl.

As Morris accepted the award for his performance as Deputy Witt Farr, he could hardly believe his major milestone. “Oh my God! Oh wow!” he exclaimed. He began his speech by thanking God “for allowing me to be here.”

Morris, best known for his comedic work, brought humor to his speech. “I also want to thank God for my wonderful mother who raised me,” he said. “She’s been my biggest advocate since I… you know, came out… you know, I fell out of her ass. I know where babies come from!”

Morris also congratulated his “beautiful daughter” Lily: “I love you. I told you I would. You always doubted me,” he joked. “I’m here, I’m your leader.”

The actor also thanked “all the people at FX,” his “wonderful cast,” and his management team, 360.” He also acknowledged his fellow nominees and admitted that he has a poster of Robert Downey Jr. hanging in his home. “Please sign it. Seriously,” he said. As music played to escort him off the stage, Morris said he was going to “do something else” on his podcast, “New Girl Rewatch.” The chaos and “thank the rest of the group.”

Talk to The Hollywood Reporter In August, Morris admitted he was surprised to be nominated along with his co-stars. “I was very confident about my performance on the show – confident about everyone’s performance. For me, it was a gamble. I thought John (Hawkes) and Juno (Temple) (would of course be nominated) because they had made a big splash earlier in the awards season,” he said. “So when I say I was shocked, I mean I was totally, totally shocked.”
