In celebration of Beautiful daysTo mark the 50th anniversary, Winkler and Howard greeted each other at a recreation of one of the show’s most famous sets: Arnold’s Drive-In, aka the restaurant where the show’s teens hung out. (Before the broadcast, ceremony producer Jesse Collins told our sister site Variety, “I’m curious if you think we fit the jukebox.” What do you think?)

Before the pair reviewed the nominees for Best Directing in a Comedy Series, Howard joked that their set-up was conspicuously lacking music. “I have a solution, though,” he said, suggesting that Winkler give the jukebox one of The Fonz’s signature thumps. But Winkler declined.

“First of all, I’m out of practice,” he said. But Howard was not to be turned away. “You went to the Yale School of Drama, Henry! Come on, you know you can do it.” So Winkler turned on the machine as only he could, and the Beautiful days The theme song played and the crowd burst into applause.

Happy Days Premiered in 1974, the series, created by Garry Marshall, ran for 11 seasons and was a nostalgic look at life in the Midwest in the 1950s and 1960s. The ensemble cast included Winkler as Fonzie, a biker who was the epitome of cool, and Howard as Richie, a naive teenager; the cast also included Tom Bosley, Marion Ross, Anson Williams, Erin Moran, Scott Baio, Pat Morita and Al Molinaro.

The series won an Emmy in 1978 for Best Editing in a Comedy Series. In addition, Winkler, Ross and director Jerry Paris were nominated several times during the series’ run. Another (less praiseworthy) fun fact: Beautiful days is behind the origin of the phrase “jump the shark” – used to indicate that a television show has lost its plot/run out of ideas – which originated from the Beautiful days Season 5 episode “Hollywood, Part 3”, in which Fonzie literally jumps over a shark while waterskiing.
