Ravens’ Roquan Smith and Odafe Oweh fined for tackles against Chiefs

Ravens outside linebacker Odafe Oweh and inside linebacker Roquan Smith were fined for unnecessary roughness in their Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL announced Saturday.

Oweh was fined $20,050 for charging Isiah Pacheco in the fourth quarter, apparently striking the Chiefs’ running back on his side with the crown of his helmet. Oweh received no penalty on that play.

Smith was fined $16,883 for a horse-collar tackle on Pacheco in the first quarter, for which the All-Pro player was penalized.

Kansas City tight end Peyton Hendershot, who did not play in the season opener, was fined $5,472 for being involved in a scuffle with Smith on the sidelines after Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was knocked to the ground in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs as an organization were also fined $100,000, according to NFL Network.

Ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Ravens signed running back John Kelly and cornerback Ka’dar Hollman to the practice squad for the second consecutive season. Kelly played just six snaps against Kansas City, all on special teams, while Hollman played 21 snaps, all on special teams.

The Ravens’ decision not to promote a defensive lineman or outside linebacker from the practice squad could bode well for the availability of outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy. Van Noy (eye) practiced only once this week, as a limited participant on Friday after fracturing an orbital bone in Week 1. But he said after Friday’s practice he was optimistic he could play against Las Vegas.
