Bengals’ Cam Taylor-Britt says Xavier Worthy is fast, but “that’s about it”

Xavier Worthy showed off his record-breaking speed in his NFL debut, but at least one player in the Cincinnati Bengals secondary was not particularly impressed with the Kansas City Chiefs rookie.

Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt didn’t mince his words on Wednesday when asked about the qualities Worthy brings to Kansas City’s offense.

“Speed, that’s all,” Taylor-Britt told reporters. “He can run straight — do jet sweeps and just run straight. There’s not much else he can do, that’s all.”

The Bengals visit the Chiefs, the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, on Sunday, and Taylor-Britt is expected to face Worthy.

Worthy was drafted 28th overall by Kansas City after excelling at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, where he ran the 40-yard dash in a record time of 4.21 seconds.

The former University of Texas star showed off his skills last Thursday when he caught a 35-yard touchdown pass and also scored a 21-yard touchdown in the Chiefs’ 27-20 victory over the Ravens. Taylor-Britt seemed confident the Bengals could contain the 6-foot-3, 175-pound Worthy.

“I think if you touch him, he only weighs a couple hundred pounds,” Taylor-Britt said. “If you touch him, you’re slowing him down. So just touch him.”

Despite the two touchdowns, Worthy’s role in Kansas City’s opener seemed to be limited, as he finished the game with two catches on just three passes attempted and a run that led to the long touchdown run.

Patrick Mahomes said Wednesday, however, that Worthy has shown he is “able to run routes and find open space,” adding that the Chiefs “want him to continue to develop.”

“It’s just going to be a spark,” Mahomes said when asked about Worthy’s debut. “It shows what he can do. Obviously, it showed his speed. It showed how he can run routes and find open space. … It’s just kind of a start for him. We want him to continue to develop. We want to get him more and more involved in the offense, but it’s a great start.”
