The Jayden Daniels era begins in earnest on Saturday when the Commanders open their three-game preseason schedule against the Jets.
Daniels, selected No. 2 in the NFL Draft out of LSU in April, will be starting for the first time in his career. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner is competing with the experienced Marcus Mariota – who won the Heisman himself in 2014 – for the starting spot.
“He’s earned the right,” Washington coach Dan Quinn told reporters when asked about the decision to put Daniels in the starting lineup.
The Jets, meanwhile, will have to wait to see their franchise quarterback in action. Aaron Rodgers, who missed almost all of last season after tearing his Achilles tendon in Week 1, will not play in either of New York’s first two preseason games.
But Rodgers is healthy and participating in practice as the first-team quarterback, giving the Jets a chance to end their 13-year playoff drought.
