Report: In the offseason, the 49ers contacted the Vikings about a trade for Justin Jefferson

Until the Vikings and receiver Justin Jefferson negotiated a new contract, it wasn’t clear if they would do that, and that prompted a few teams to call to consider a possible trade for him.

One of those teams was the 49ers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.

According to the report, the 49ers have “checked in” on Jefferson’s availability. The Vikings said he was unavailable.

The Jets and Colts also have “some interest” in trading Jefferson, Schefter reports.

The 49ers made the call before their own contract drama unfolded with receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who was selected three picks after Jefferson in 2020.

The question for the Vikings was whether to pay Jefferson and, if not, whether to trade him. In fact, during the first round of the 2024 draft, we heard rumors that the Vikings were trying to move up to No. 5 with the Chargers to get receiver Malik Nabers, a move that potentially would have resulted in Jefferson suddenly becoming available.

It’s a fundamental question of roster construction and cap management. The Vikings are paying Jefferson $35 million per year in new money. They could have had Nabers for $33 million over four years at fifth overall. Not per year, but overall.

Although the Vikings and Jefferson finally renewed their wedding vows in June, that doesn’t mean it was always meant to be that way. Jefferson wanted what he wanted, and the Vikings weren’t willing to give it to him. It wasn’t until they changed their minds that the deal went through.

But now it is. And the 49ers will have to deal with Jefferson later today.

The last time the 49ers traveled to Minnesota for a Monday night game in 2023, Jefferson was injured. The Vikings still somehow managed to win.
