Jaguars star tight end Evan Engram suffered a hamstring injury while warming up before Jacksonville’s home opener against Cleveland on Sunday and will therefore have to leave the game, the club announced.
Engram was not on Jacksonville’s inactive list, which was released just minutes before his injury was announced.
Engram is in his third season as a starting tight end for Jacksonville after joining the franchise as a free agent on a one-year contract in the 2022 offseason.
He signed a three-year, $41.3 million contract extension with the Jaguars last summer after catching career-highs of 73 passes and receiving yards for 766 in his first season with the team.
Engram’s career-high 114 passes caught in 2023 surpassed his performance from the previous year and was the second-most in a single season in Jacksonville history. Only wide receiver Jimmy Smith achieved more than him with 116 in 1999.
In 35 games, including 30 starts with the Jaguars, Engram has caught 188 passes for 1,734 yards and eight touchdowns.
Engram and safety Darnell Savage Jr. are the only Jaguars starters specifically out for Week 2, although cornerback Tyson Campbell will not play after being placed on the injured list on Thursday. He will miss at least four games.
