In a May interview on the “Today Show,” Rumer noted that her father was “doing well” and enjoying time with her one-year-old daughter Louetta, whom she has with ex-boyfriend Derek Richard Thomas.

She said, “I actually saw him just before I came to New York,” adding, “Lou is just starting to walk a little bit and she walked over to him and it was so sweet.”

Rumer continued, “It’s so beautiful because I feel like my dad is just – he’s a girl dad through and through. It almost brings out that little kid kind of girl dad thing. He’s so sweet to her.”

During the interview, Rumer also stressed the importance of her family’s openness about Bruce’s health issues, explaining that her vulnerability is meant to raise awareness.

“Our vulnerability and transparency as a family about what he’s going through is so important to me. Because if this can have any impact on another family that’s struggling with something like this in any way, or if it can bring more attention to the disease in hopes of finding a cure or anything that can help anybody, then I think that’s really important,” Rumer explained.

On February 16, 2023, Bruce’s family provided an update on his health, saying he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). They described the disease as “the most common form of dementia” and acknowledged that there are currently “no treatments for this disease.”

In their statement, the family wrote: “As Bruce’s condition worsens, we hope that media attention can be directed towards shedding light on this disease that needs much more attention and research.”

The family stressed that “Bruce always believed in using his voice in the world to help others and raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately.”

They added: “We know in our hearts that if he could today, he would respond by raising global awareness and creating a sense of connection with those who are also battling this debilitating disease and the impact it has on so many people and their families.”

In an Instagram post, Bruce’s wife Emma criticised a report that said her husband had lost all “joy” in life as he battled dementia and aphasia.

The former model stressed that the 68-year-old Hollywood icon still enjoys life and urged a more nuanced understanding of the quality of life that people can maintain despite their neurocognitive disorders.

In a video she shared on Instagram, Emma claims: “The headline says my husband is no longer a joy. All I can tell you is that is far from the truth. I want society and whoever is writing these stupid headlines to stop scaring people.”

Bruce was diagnosed with aphasia in March 2022. His family members confirmed the sad news in a joint statement on their Instagram pages. They then posted an update in January 2023 announcing that the movie star had also been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
