Dana White laughs at Kendrick Lamar and Terence Crawford’s UFC blunder; fans return to Bud reference in Drake’s diss track

The September 14 broadcast of UFC 306 featured a really funny identity crisis blunder. World boxing champion Terence Crawford, sitting cageside at The Sphere in Las Vegas, was mistaken for Kendrick Lamar and publicly referred to as a “Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning musician” on live television.

Kendrick Lamar unexpectedly released his diss track "euphoria" in April 2024 in response to Drake's song "Push-ups" in the midst of their lengthy war of words.
In April 2024, in the midst of their lengthy war of words, Kendrick Lamar unexpectedly released his diss track “Euphoria” in response to Drake’s song “Push Ups.”

Viewers were quick to jump on the meme bandwagon, posting hilarious reactions to the incident on social media. Former UFC champion Aljamain Sterling also joined in on the hilarious chain of interactions, tweeting, “Terence Crawford turned into Kendrick Lamar tonight.” Bellator middleweight champion Johnny Eblen burst out laughing when he saw the mix-up on TV, sharing the scene on X: “Yo they mistakenly thought Bud Crawford was Kendrick Lamar (crying emoji).”

Crawford also laughed off the mistaken incident on Instagram and showed his affection for the rapper by tagging him in the screenshot while Lamar’s diss track against Drake, “Euphoria,” played. Ironically, the six-minute rap battle song also mentions Crawford’s name, with Lamar saying, “He’s Terrence Thornton, I’m Terence Crawford, yeah I’m Whoopin’ feat.”

UFC CEO Dana White responds

When UFC CEO Dana White was asked in a post-event interview if he was expecting a text message from Kendrick Lamar and Terence Crawford, he cheekily said he had spoken to Crawford about the identity crisis faux pas.

“That was pretty bad… He actually looked a little like Kendrick Lamar… let’s not mess around,” a nervous White replied, laughing his head off. “So when I said we had a flawless production tonight, I take that back.”

Internet users react to the confusion between Kendrick Lamar and Terence Crawford

When the TV screenshot went viral on X, formerly Twitter, Lamar quickly became a trend on the platform. Internet users laughed their heads off and said that someone would definitely get fired after this major blunder. Some even joked that this “intentional trolling” was planned, considering Lamar referred to himself as Crawford in his Drake diss track earlier this year.

“UFC is forever mad at Terrance Crawford being shown as Kendrick Lamar. They weren’t confused about anything, you guys just weren’t listening,” one user joked.

Another X-user echoed the sentiment: “Terence Crawford may not be Kendrick Lamar, but Kendrick Lamar is Terence Crawford

Several others agreed that the UFC’s faux pas was “definitely a nod” to Lamar’s “euphoria.” On the contrary, some asked, “How can a company as big as the UFC get it so wrong??”

Another person chimed in: “Maybe someone thought Terence was his real name and Kendrick was his rap name.” Another netizen fumed that people didn’t notice the humor in the situation and suggested the whole thing was part of a plan: “Y’all really want to deny that the grass is green because how could that be a mistake?”
