Erislandy Lara vs Danny Garcia betting analysis

Cuban middleweight Erislandy Lara will put his WBA belt on the line this Saturday night against former 140-pound unification champion Danny Garcia as the undercard to the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga showdown this weekend in Las Vegas.

Lara, who suffered a controversial loss to Canelo over a decade ago, has had more success at middleweight, where he has held a share of the belt for well over five years now.

However, this is partly due to a clever matchmaking process and it will be interesting to see how long the Cuban veteran can continue to rule at the age of 41.

Erislandy Lara enters the ring this weekend as a -260 favorite, while Danny Garcia returns as a +200 underdog.

Lara has adapted well to the new style

Erislandy Lara has changed his style incredibly well as he has gotten older and increased in weight and almost looks like a completely different fighter than the one who fought Canelo Alvarez and Austin Trout all those years ago.

Lara, who used to be a quick long-distance fighter, has now opted for a much more internal approach to boxing, countering opponents who try too hard with some devastating one-punch knockouts, most recently in his last fight against Michael Zerafa.

Is Danny Garcia still Danny Garcia?

Danny Garcia was once THE man in the 140-pound division, sensationally beating Lucas Matthysse as a huge underdog in their Las Vegas showdown. But those days are now nearly 11 years ago, and despite a decent welterweight career that saw him capture the WBC title, Garcia’s rise as the sport’s main attraction has stalled considerably in recent years.

As proof of this, Danny Garcia has only fought once since December 2020, and as he continues to move up in weight classes, first to 154 pounds and now to 160 pounds, it is unclear if the Danny Garcia who shows up on Saturday night will look anything like the version that stepped into the ring against Errol Spence Jr. nearly four years ago.

Expert prediction for Erislandy Lara against Danny Garcia

Both fighters have been extremely inactive in recent years, with Lara herself having only fought one fight since May 2022. So it will be interesting to see which versions of these fighters we get to see on Saturday.

Yet Danny Garcia still looked like Danny Garcia when he beat Jose Benavidez Jr. in his last fight, and it’s a style he’s become incredibly comfortable in. He looks to venture inside and deliver his strong, compact hooks.

That could put him in dangerous territory this weekend against this new, powerful version of Lara, but Danny Garcia has never been stopped in his entire career and if Lara can’t land a big shot in this fight, the smaller man could very well wear him down and get the win.

With Garcia extra motivated after his father suffered a stroke in April, we’re predicting the Philadelphia fighter will win Saturday against Erislandy Lara.
