Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown has to undergo shoulder surgery and is placed on the injured list

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown will undergo surgery on his dislocated shoulder and has been placed on the injured list, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Friday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the move. The appointment will sideline Brown for at least the next four weeks.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who will speak to reporters after practice Friday, said earlier this week that Brown was “close” to playing, but one of their most important additions missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday because of the dislocated sternoclavicular joint he suffered in an Aug. 10 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The two-time defending Super Bowl champions will play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

The Chiefs had continually compared Brown’s injury to a similar injury suffered by then-Kansas City receiver Tyreek Hill in Week 1 of the 2019 season, which caused him to miss the next four weeks. Their decision not to place Brown on the injured list when they trimmed their roster after training camp was an indication that they hoped to get him back within that timeframe.

Instead, surgery to repair the shoulder joint could put Brown out of action for several months.

The rest of the Chiefs’ wide receiver corps was productive in the season-opening win over Baltimore last week. Second-year pro Rashee Rice caught seven balls for 103 yards, first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy scored touchdowns running and receiving, and versatile backup Justin Watson caught a pass for 25 yards on his only attempt in the 27-20 win.

The Chiefs are also expecting more from JuJu Smith-Schuster this week. He was released by the New England Patriots and had only a few practices after his contract extension with Kansas City before facing the Ravens, which would have limited the number of plays Smith-Schuster could have made.
