Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Elko told ESPN before kickoff Saturday in Gainesville that quarterback Marcel Reed will start against the Florida Gators.
Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman was listed as questionable on Thursday before being named a game-time decision on Saturday. Elko said Weigman, who is dealing with an AC sprain in his throwing shoulder suffered in the loss to Notre Dame, will be used as a backup against Florida.
“We’re going to go with Marcel Reed,” Elko said. “I think Conner will be ready in some sort of backup role, but we just felt like Marcel was our guy today when we watched the game before the game. … He’s going to go out there and play a great game. We have a lot of confidence in him. He’s prepared for this moment and we believe he’s going to lead this team.”
In last week’s win over McNeese State, Reed completed 5 of 11 passes for 71 yards, along with seven runs for 43 yards.
Reed led the Aggies on a scoring drive during A&M’s first possession of the game against Florida,
