Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest player ratings: Mohamed Salah makes a mistake as Arne Slot’s substitutions lead to Reds’ first defeat

The Egyptian international was awful as Callum Hudson-Odoi’s second-half strike condemned the Merseysiders to their first defeat of the season

Before Saturday’s clash, Liverpool had not lost a home game against Nottingham Forest since 1969, but they were defeated by Nuno Espirito Santo’s combative side, who put in a remarkably strong defensive performance, and Arne Slot suffered his first competitive defeat as manager.

Luis Diaz had the first big chance when he chased a hopeless challenge, won the ball high up the pitch and hit the post with a low shot. Alexis Mac Allister also tested Matz Sels twice in the first half and his header almost led to a terrible mistake when the goalkeeper grabbed the ball, dropped it and almost backheeled it into his own net.

In the second half, Liverpool dominated the pitch and had more possession, but struggled to break past Forest. Slot made a bizarre triple substitution, taking off his best player, Mac Allister, and leaving the increasingly ineffective Mohamed Salah on.

And they were punished in the 72nd minute when Callum Hudson-Odoi broke in from the left and fired a brilliant shot against the post to give the visitors a 1-0 win.
