Kirk Herbstreit: South Carolina must use home advantage against LSU

The nation will have eyes on South Carolina Comparisons LSU in Week 3 after ESPN chose College GameDay as host after the Gamecocks dominated Kentucky 31-6 away last weekend.

Although South Carolina won its SEC opener in impressive fashion, the team is still an underdog against the Tigers on home soil. With the odds stacked against them, College GameDay host Kirk Herbstreit believes South Carolina’s effort on Saturday starts with the fans in the stands.

“That’s the key,” Herbstreit said, gesturing to the crowd gathered around the ESPN College GameDay set. “They have to be able to make their defense play at full steam, and they have to win on special teams. But Shane Beamer is known for that, it has to be that type of game for South Carolina where they play complementary football. They get turnovers, they have a short field.”

“They play football with Rocket grinder. Their quarterback is playing smart, but it will start with their defense.”

South Carolina didn’t have the full power of Williams-Brice Stadium to draw on against Kentucky in Week 2. Still, they managed to control the game at every stage, especially in the second half.

Sanders completed 13 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown during the game, while quarterback LaNorris Sellers threw his first two touchdown passes of the season.

Defensively, it was the defensive line that made the game so one-sided. True freshman EDGE Dylan Stewart led the Wildcats, forcing them to make 18 consecutive running plays as quarterback Brock Vandagriff had no time to catch his breath. The unit ended the day with five sacks.

“In the SEC, the defensive linemen can make or break the game,” Herbsreit continued. “You have eight players that they rotate to keep them fresh. Let that defense do what they do, make it difficult for them Garrett Nussmeier and this LSU offense. You ask me how they win the game? That’s what they have to do: They have to take advantage of being here in Columbia, South Carolina.”

The Gamecocks won their first home game in Week 1, 23-19, against Old Dominion, but Nick Saban, who also hosts College GameDay, said South Carolina improved the most from Week 1 to Week 2.

How they will fare against their toughest competition yet, the LSU Tigers, remains to be seen. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET live on ABC.
