The good and bad news about Netflix’s potential purchase of ‘Hot Ones’

According to a new report, Netflix is currently in talks to buy Hot Ones, YouTube’s hottest (pun intended) interview show in which celebrities eat increasingly hot chicken wings while answering relatively normal interview questions from host Sean Evans. Now Netflix may want to acquire the show from YouTube and add it to its massive library of series and expand its content in new directions.

The proposed deal doesn’t even call for taking the series off YouTube entirely, but instead “hosting some live versions of the show exclusively for Netflix,” Bloomberg reported. Buzzfeed, the owner of First We Feast, whose most popular show by far is Hot Ones, has reportedly been trying to sell the series, so that deal could actually happen.

So the good news is that Netflix may not pull the show from YouTube entirely and these live shows could actually be something else entirely. I’ve also heard some concerns that if Netflix does indeed acquire Hot Ones, they would meddle with it and then cancel it shortly after the acquisition for underperformance or something.

But… that seems unlikely if things actually go in the direction of Netflix taking full ownership. This show is about as cheap as you can imagine, because it costs about as much to prep as dinner for two at Buffalo Wild Wings, and the production costs of shooting in a single room are nowhere near as much as any other show they have. The money would be in what they pay Sean Evans and what they pay Buzzfeed overall for the deal.

The “interference” may consist of doing this live, and it is not entirely clear to me why they Do want to do it live by recording existing episodes before broadcasting, and what benefit that offers. They want more live TV to complement the minimal offerings they have now, but this seems like an odd place for it.

Another concern would be that Netflix would be overly self-promoting and incestuous with this idea. Evans interviews actors, singers, sports stars, basically anyone in the world. And the fear is that Netflix might just use this to promote its next original. That’s not to say that that couldn’t lead to some entertaining interviews with good actors, but turning the whole show into a spice-based advertisement for its own service wouldn’t be ideal. But we just don’t know those plans yet, and you can bet that if, say, Taylor Swift or Kamala Harris were to appear, the self-promotion would go to hell.

I’d say this deal is more likely to happen as Netflix is pouring money into diversifying content everywhere and the show is set to be sold anyway. We’ll be looking for more news soon.
