star Wars has never shied away from letting characters from different areas interact. Luke Skywalker’s cameo appearance in The Mandalorian is one of the most exciting moments of the entire saga, and characters like Saw Gerrera keep popping up in different eras. Fans are excited to see who their new favorite characters will interact with, adding to the magic of this interconnected universe.

One of the most interesting aspects of The Rise of Skywalker was Rey’s desire to interact with and learn from the Jedi, which paved the way for everything she hopes to accomplish in the series. Figures like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Yoda shared their wisdom with her, reminding her of who she is, and letting her know that the Order’s legacy was in good hands with her. One Jedi, however, did not speak to her, suggesting he may still be alive – and he may be the best guide for Rey as she tries to rebuild the Jedi Order.

Rey’s new order should rethink this strict Jedi rule

The future of the Star Wars universe is near, and the lessons from The Acolyte and the sequel trilogy can guide Rey as she rebuilds the Jedi Order.

Rey’s first scene in The Rise of Skywalker shows her meditating, begging the Jedi of the past to reach out to her and show her what to do next. Learning from the legacy of those who came before her has always been one of the core tenets of the Jedi Order, and seeing Rey embark on this journey shows that she is more than willing and able to step into the Order’s traditions as she works to rebuild the Order. However, she ran into trouble when previous generations of Jedi seemingly ignored her pleas to share their wisdom. She becomes more and more frustrated as time goes on. The Rise of Skywalkerand tries to figure out where exactly she went so wrong that she was abandoned by the people whose legacy she wants to respect. Their refusal to acknowledge her makes her doubt who she is and whether she is on the right path, especially when she finds out the truth about her past and begins to question whether she is destined to fall into darkness or if the Jedi Order is her future. She spends most of her time The Rise of Skywalker in the depths of a severe identity crisis, and it adds an interesting layer to her character as she struggles to stay in the light.

But the Jedi finally hear her cries when she faces her grandfather, Emperor Palpatine, on Exegol. He nearly defeats her when he summons the power of all the Sith who came before him to become the most powerful member of their Legion. Already one of the deadliest villains the galaxy has ever seen, he becomes even more menacing with all their power flowing through him. Rey, only halfway through her training, struggles to hold her own against him. He knocks her to the ground, and for a horrific moment, it seems as if evil is about to take control of the galaxy.

In that dark moment, Rey’s greatest wish finally comes true. As she looks at the destruction above her, the Jedi of the past finally hear her cries. They remind her who she is – a Jedi through and through. Her past doesn’t matter; only what she does next matters for the future. She doesn’t have to let her family define her, no matter how much her lineage may terrify her. There is good in her if she chooses to do so (which she does thousands of times). Countless members of the Jedi Order turn to her, giving her the strength to rise up and defeat Palpatine once and for all. But one was conspicuously missing – and he may be Rey’s most valuable asset.

Cal Kestis, star of Jedi: Fallen Order And Jedi: Survivor could be Rey’s guide through the future stages of her journey. His voice was not heard in The Rise of Skywalkerwhich suggests that he is still alive at the time of the film, as the only Jedi she has heard of were those who were (probably) already deceased at the time of the film. So he could visit her as she prepares to form the New Jedi Order and be one of her most valuable mentors for many reasons. First and foremost, the two have experienced similar stories. Both grew up pretty much alone after experiencing tremendous tragedy at a young age. For Cal, it was Order 66 and for Rey, her parents left her on Jakku to fend for herself in hopes of protecting her from her grandfather. This led to both being unwilling to trust humans at first sight. Cal tried to keep Cere and Greez at a distance for as long as possible and Rey only responded with hostility to Finn’s initial attempts to form a connection with her.

Cal’s work to become the best Jedi he could be after the Order’s destruction may parallel Rey’s attempts to rebuild it. Both must learn to exist outside the Order’s confines, staying true to its core beliefs while determining which aspects of the institution they can leave behind as they adapt to this new normal. Cal learned this lesson a thousand times during the events of Jedi: Survivor as he struggled with the intersection between his loyalty to the Order he once called home and his newfound feelings for Merrin. He was able to show Rey which of the Order’s beliefs were most important and help her adapt them to a new era, having spent so much time in that transitional period.

Additionally, Cal is the perfect person to help Rey master one of her rarest abilities: psychometry. The ability to sense an object’s history by merely touching it is one of the most interesting Force powers a Jedi can have, but it comes with dangerous consequences. Those who wield it are often privy to far more emotions than they know how to handle, and this can lead to them being overwhelmed by negative feelings that push the user closer to the dark side. Cal has somewhat figured out how to master his psychometry over the course of his two games with the help of his friends, but Rey hasn’t had that privilege. His firsthand experience with psychometry makes him the best person to teach Rey how to use this potentially dangerous power.

Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in a new Star Wars film – and “The Bad Batch” has given her a fearsome opponent.

But perhaps more important than anything else is that Cal can help Rey in her battle with the dark side. The Rise of Skywalkershe makes it abundantly clear that her greatest fear is losing herself in the darkness and becoming the person her grandfather wants her to be. Her vision of herself on the throne of the Sith terrifies her beyond belief, and Palpatine exploits this fear to convince her that she is not strong enough to stand up to him. Therefore, he believes that it is her destiny to join him. It is not the first time that she has been afraid of falling. She was drawn directly to the Well of Darkness on Ahch-to, and Kylo believed that she would be the one to turn when the time came for one of them to join the other. The darkness is in her blood; she is powerless to resist it. Although she manages to overpower him and choose her destiny, she is still shaken by this encounter and fears that her future holds nothing but darkness.

Cal Kestis would be the perfect person to help her realize that there is more to her than what she believes to be an insurmountable darkness. His entire story arc in Jedi: Survivor is about his struggle to resist the dark side in a world that seems determined to bring out the worst in him. He embraces it several times in the game’s final chapter after his best friend Bode turns out to be a traitor who wants nothing more than to claim the sanctuary of Tanalorr for himself. However, he manages to retreat (at least at the end of Jedi: Survivoralthough Cal’s story is far from over), and in the next game he will likely do everything in his power to avoid returning to that dark place by any means necessary. Assuming he prevails at the end of the story, he would be the perfect person to remind Rey that she is not destined to become a villain just because she once battled with the dark side. He is living proof that she will not necessarily lose herself, and can remind her of who she is when she fears she is losing sight of her identity. The two would make a fascinating pair and hopefully they get the chance to work together in future entries of the star Wars Saga.
