Cubs lose to Rockies and are 6 games behind the Mets for the NL wildcard

DENVER (AP) — Hunter Goodman hit two home runs, including a game-winning grand slam in the eighth inning, and the Colorado Rockies came back to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-5 on Friday night.

Goodman finished the game with three hits and seven RBIs, a career-best. It was the first game by a Rockies player with seven RBIs since Elías Díaz on September 9, 2022 against Arizona, where he also had seven RBIs.

Ezequiel Tovar hit his 23rd home run of the season and Brendan Rodgers hit a run-scoring double for the Rockies, who ended a six-game losing streak to the Cubs. With the loss, Chicago fell six games behind the Mets and secured its third NL wild card.

Michael Busch had three hits for the Cubs, including a three-run home run against Victor Vodnik (4-3) in the eighth inning that helped Chicago to a 5-5 tie.

Ryan McMahon hit a single against reliever Drew Smyly (3-7) to start the eighth inning. Rodgers walked and Michael Toglia singled to clear all bases. Nate Pearson relieved Smyly before Goodman hit his second multihomer hit and his first slam.

Austin Gomber, who had been on the paternity list for three days after the birth of his third child, was reinstated. He went six innings and allowed two runs on nine hits.

The Cubs brought Gomber in with two runs in the first inning on Cody Bellinger’s one-out single, scoring Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson.

But the Rockies came back and took the lead with a three-run second inning against Chicago starter Javier Assad. Rodgers’ RBI double and Goodman’s two-run drive that flew 430 feet into the left-field bleachers were the main players. Colorado scored another run in the fourth inning on Goodman’s RBI single.

Tovar hit a home run in the seventh inning to give Colorado a 5-2 lead.

TRAINING ROOM

Rockies: Kris Bryant’s recovery from a back strain has slowed to the point where his return this season is unlikely, manager Bud Black said. Bryant was placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 12 after his back problems resurfaced. He has been on the injured list twice this season for a back strain and a bruised left rib. “He’s not really close,” Black said. “It’s becoming more and more likely that Kris’ season is over.” Bryant has missed 104 of the Rockies’ 148 games this season due to injury.
