Aces beat Fever and end the season with a sweep

Chelsea Gray scored a team-leading 21 points to help the Las Vegas Aces to a 78-74 win over the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis on Friday.

Kelsey Plum added 18 points while A’ja Wilson had 15 points and 17 rebounds (a game-high) as the Aces (24-13) won their sixth game in seven tries. Jackie Young added 12 points for the Aces.

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana (19-19) with 20 points, followed by Caitlin Clark with 18. Aliyah Boston scored 14 and Damiris Dantas scored 11 points off the bench for the Fever, who have lost two games in a row. Las Vegas also completed a four-game season sweep of Indiana.

The Aces led by eight points at halftime, but Young’s mid-range jump shot and Gray’s three-pointer extended Las Vegas’ lead to 48-35, forcing Indiana to take a timeout at 8:52 of the third quarter.

Indiana responded with a 6-0 run as Boston sank a pair of jumpers before Clark’s layup cut the Fever’s deficit to 48-41 with 7:40 left.

Later in the quarter, Clark’s 3-pointer was matched by Gray’s three, but then Clark accounted for six of the game’s next eight points, cutting Las Vegas’ lead to 56-52 and forcing the Aces to take a timeout with 2:09 left in the third quarter.

Tiffany Hayes’ layup stopped the timeout, but Clark’s heat check continued with another 3-pointer with 51 seconds left.

Las Vegas led 60-57 at the start of the final quarter after Gray sank a pull-up jumper with five seconds left.

Dantas opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to tie the game, but Indiana remained scoreless until the 5:43 mark when Mitchell hit a free throw to cut the Fever deficit to 65-61.

Indiana fell behind 72-68 with 2:05 left, but Clark cut the deficit in half with a layup at 1:48. After Clark missed a three-pointer to take the lead, Plum sank a three-pointer to give the Aces a 75-70 lead with 56 seconds left.

With 42.2 seconds left, Dantas made a mid-range jump shot, but Gray’s two free throws decided the game.

In the first quarter, Mitchell’s jump shot gave Indiana an 11-10 lead, but Wilson’s mid-range jump shot followed by Plum’s three-pointer started a 9-0 run by Las Vegas and helped the Aces take a 19-13 lead early in the second quarter.

With the Aces leading 38-32 after 1:00, Alysha Clark and Mitchell exchanged three-point shots before Wilson’s hook shot with 13.1 seconds left gave Las Vegas a 43-35 halftime lead.
