Raiders head coach would advise Tua Tagovailoa to retire after recent concussion: “Take care of your family”

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another severe concussion on Thursday Night Football, and Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce is concerned about the quarterback.

“I’ll be honest, I would advise him to quit. It’s not worth it. I’ve never seen anything happen to him three times,” Pierce said during a press conference on Friday.

“You could see the faces of the players on the field immediately; you could see the urgency to help Tua. I just think at some point he’s going to live longer than just playing football. Take care of your family.”

The Dolphins were trailing 31-10 against the Buffalo Bills, the Dolphins offense was at the Buffalo 13-yard line. It was fourth-and-4 and the Dolphins needed a touchdown to stay in the game.

The 26-year-old attempted to make the first attempt, but was tackled by safety Damar Hamlin instead of slipping as he passed the bars. Tagovailoa immediately went down and hit his head on the turf of Hard Rock Stadium.

Tagovailoa appeared disoriented as his hand began to shake uncontrollably, and he held his head as the Dolphins crowded around him. Players from both the Bills and Dolphins knelt as medical personnel quickly rushed to examine the quarterback.

After being on the ground for several minutes, Tagovailoa was finally able to leave the field under his own power and with a noticeable limp. Instead of going to the blue medical tent, Tagovailoa left the field with his trainers and went to the locker room, where they diagnosed him with a concussion.

The other cases Pierce referred to took place during the 2022 season, when Tagovailoa appeared to suffer a concussion in a Week 3 home game against the Bills, but it was later ruled that he was dealing with a back injury that caused him to stumble after clearly hitting his head on the ground during a play.

Just days later, in Week 4, Tagaovailoa was thrown to the turf at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati during Thursday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals. A disturbing scene occurred when he held his hands in a pose, a behavior that sometimes occurs with head injuries that cause the fingers to twist.

Tagovailoa was carried off the field on a stretcher and returned to the game in Week 7.

Later that season, Tagovailoa suffered another concussion in a Week 16 Christmas Day game against the Green Bay Packers and did not play the rest of the season.

Tagovailoa did not miss a single game last season and the Dolphins signed him to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension after he led the NFL in passing yards in 2023.

After the loss to the Bills, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked if it was safe for Tagovailoa to continue playing football.

“I think from a medical standpoint, I don’t go into things where I have far less expertise. I’m just there to support my teammate, like I said,” McDaniel told reporters. “I think it’s not appropriate for me to predict things that I don’t know in my non-specialized area.”

“I think we’ll get more information tomorrow on where Tua is. He’ll be able to be evaluated for quite a while, then we’ll have conversations and move forward accordingly. Like the rest of his teammates, he was walking around the locker room with them and establishing rapport with them as a leader, trying to keep the guys happy. He’ll be in the office tomorrow to get the appropriate care.”

The Dolphins’ next game is on September 22 against the Seattle Seahawks.
