People ‘expect’ Manchester City to be found guilty, says Pep Guardiola | Manchester City

Pep Guardiola has said he knows what “people expect” as Manchester City prepare for a hearing into allegations against the Premier League, which is due to begin on Monday. The manager’s comments came as Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, claimed several Premier League clubs had told him City should be punished.

City have denied any wrongdoing and Guardiola was questioned about the case, which is being heard by an independent commission. He said, not referring to Tebas or his comments: “I’m glad it starts on Monday and I know there will be more rumours about the verdicts and we will see. I know what people are looking for, I know what they expect – I know because I’ve been reading it for many years – but I have said that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. So we will see. It starts soon and hopefully it will be over soon. An independent panel will decide. I look forward to the decision.”

Guardiola said he and his players had not discussed the case. “No. I am not a lawyer. There are many lawyers in this country and in Spain, but I am waiting. We will wait and see. We are not lawyers. Erling (Haaland) is not a lawyer, so we have not discussed it. What will happen is with the independent panel and we will accept the verdict.”

Tebas, a long-time critic of City, was quoted by Mundo Deportivo as saying: “I have spoken to many Premier League clubs and most of them understand that City should be punished.”

This week, Haaland’s close friend Ivar Eggja died. Guardiola will wait to see if the striker is available for Brentford’s visit on Saturday. “It was a difficult moment for him and his family,” he said. “It was sad news for someone close to him and his family. Our thoughts are with them. It’s sad and we will see tomorrow (Saturday) if he is mentally and physically able to play.”

Nathan Aké was stretchered off the pitch during the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Germany on Tuesday and will miss at least seven matches, Guardiola said. “I think it will be like this until the next international break (October 6-14). We have been unlucky with Nathan and the national team. Every time he goes there he comes back injured.”
