Heavy rain and some severe storms are expected on Friday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Good morning and happy Friday. Today is a 48-degree First Alert weather day as we continue to deal with the local impacts of Francine.

We’ll start the day with some light to moderate rain showers across the region, which may slow down your morning commute to work and school. Fresh winds will continue to blow out of the southeast through early morning, with occasional gusts over 30 mph, potentially causing more power outages across the region. The biggest concern today is slow-moving tropical rainbands that will continue to move across the Tennessee Valley. This will lead to possible flash flooding. A Flood Warning is in effect until 7:00 a.m. Saturday.

Due to higher humidity and warmer temperatures, a few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible today from late morning into the afternoon. As any storm becomes more organized, there is a risk of gusty winds and a slight threat of tornadoes. Rain will continue to develop throughout the afternoon and evening hours, and it could be a wet night for several high school football games.

The threat of more widespread and drenching rain looks set to develop overnight into early Saturday morning. Rainfall amounts today through Saturday evening will range from 1 to 4 inches, with even higher amounts possible if rain bands become stationary. Saturday will start with more moderate to heavier rain and cloudy skies as the remnant of Francine lingers to the northwest. Hopefully the rain will ease or at least become more isolated by Saturday afternoon and evening.

Sunday should bring a few more dry hours during the day, with highs of around 27 degrees. Next week will start mostly dry, with temperatures continuing to rise during the working week, with highs of just under 32 degrees on Thursday and Friday.
